Rachel Hoyle

Rachel Hoyle is a Lecturer in the Foundation Programme of the Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University (since Sept 2021). Previously, she held a part-time Lecturer role in Art & Design Foundation at Staffordshire University (2018–2021). She is a practicing ceramic artist and educator, specializing in contemporary ceramics and community-based design projects. Hoyle’s work bridges artistic practice and pedagogy, with a focus on material exploration and educational outreach.

Education includes a Master of Arts in Ceramic Design from Staffordshire University (2017), a PGCE in Post Compulsory Art & Design from Lancaster University (2006), and a BA (Hons) in Three-Dimensional Design from Manchester Metropolitan University (2002).

Her research interests revolve around ceramics as a medium for storytelling and cultural expression, as seen in her exhibitions such as the 2017 British Ceramics Biennial and her solo show at The Atkinson Art Gallery (2003). She has also engaged in community initiatives through her role as an Associate Artist with the British Ceramics Biennial, delivering workshops in schools and industrial settings since 2015.

Hoyle has received notable awards for her artistic and educational contributions, including the Potclays Graduate Award (2017) and the Shelley Group Award (2015). Her ceramic design practice, Hoyle Ceramics, focuses on contemporary tableware and architectural ceramics, as evidenced by her bone china collection exploring Liverpool’s heritage.

Her professional training includes safeguarding, health and safety, and inclusive education certifications, reflecting her commitment to ethical and accessible teaching practices.
