R. Jason Sherman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. His research focuses on ancient Mesoamerican states, particularly the formation and political/economic organization of the Monte Albán state in the Valley of Oaxaca and Maya Lowlands settlements in Quintana Roo. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan. Sherman has led archaeological projects in Oaxaca and co-directed the Proyecto Arqueológico Centro de Quintana Roo since 2010, focusing on the site of Margarita.

His research interests include ceramic production networks, sociopolitical integration in early states, and regional interaction networks. Recent work examines how state formation influenced ceramic exchange and territorial control. He co-organized the 2010 Midwest Mesoamericanist Meeting at UW-Milwaukee.
Teaching includes courses on archaeology, Mesoamerican civilizations, and the anthropology of power. His publications span archaeological science, settlement patterns, and state dynamics in Mesoamerica.
