Qian Wang serves as the Chinese Language Program Director and Teaching Professor of Chinese Linguistics at the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of British Columbia. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Victoria and an M.A. in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Tsinghua University.
Dr. Wang's research focuses on Chinese language education with emphasis on innovative teaching methodologies that integrate linguistic theory with practical classroom application. Her work includes developing online learning materials through UBC Flexible Learning funding and implementing teaching enhancement projects for second/foreign language instruction. She speaks fluent Cantonese and multiple Chinese dialects, with additional knowledge of Korean, French, Japanese, and German.
Her teaching philosophy centers on extending language learning beyond the classroom to create lifelong passion in students. Dr. Wang lives on campus with her family and has an unusual hobby of precise culinary knife work, maintaining a specialized collection of knives for different food preparation tasks.
