Popy Begum, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the School of Social Work, Saint Louis University. Her research focuses on intersectional issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and religion in criminology, with a particular emphasis on human trafficking, sex work, and violence against women. She also examines comparative international crime and justice systems across South Asia, the Balkans, West Africa, the US, and the UK. Her work explores law and society dynamics including pre-trial justice, criminal stigma, re-entry, public opinion, and criminal justice policy, alongside evaluation research in violence reduction and program effectiveness.
Dr. Begum holds a PhD in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Research Methods) from the University of Oxford, and a BA in International Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. She teaches courses such as Foundations of Criminal Justice, Intimate Partner Violence, and Victimology and Victimization.
