Poopalasingam Sivakumar

Dr. Poopalasingam Sivakumar is an Associate Professor in the School of Physics and Applied Physics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale since Fall 2015. He serves as Graduate Program Director and leads the Laser Spectroscopy and Optical Physics Lab.

• Ph.D. in Experimental Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics from University of Oklahoma (2009)
• Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Delaware State University

Research Focus: High-resolution spectroscopy techniques for biomedical, biological, and environmental applications, including cancer cell detection. Investigates fundamental laser-matter interaction phenomena and the multidisciplinary impact of laser technology across industrial, defense, and scientific domains.

Teaching: Offers courses in physics including PHYS 205B and PHYS 430. Maintains office hours in Neckers 462.
