Po-Lin Chiu

Po-Lin Chiu is an Associate Professor in the School of Molecular Sciences and a faculty member at the Biodesign Center for Applied Structural Discovery, Arizona State University. His research focuses on membrane protein structures, lipid-protein interactions, and method development in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). He completed his bachelor's in Pharmacy and master's in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, followed by a Ph.D. in Biophysics from UC Davis. Postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and UC Davis further honed his expertise in structural biology.

Education: B.Sc. Pharmacy (1995-1999), M.E.E. Electrical Engineering (1999-2001), Ph.D. Biophysics (2004-2009), Postdoctoral Fellowships at Harvard (2010-2016) and UC Davis (2009-2010).

Research Interests: Investigating membrane protein structures in disease contexts (e.g., axonal regeneration inhibitors), photosynthetic systems, and cryo-EM techniques. His lab uses cryo-EM, biochemical assays, and computational modeling to study protein-lipid interactions and bioenergetic pathways.

Recent work highlights structural insights into aquaporin-0 arrays, p97 ATPase inhibitors, and photosynthetic supercomplexes. He collaborates on projects funded by NSF, NIH, and the Army Research Office, focusing on quantum biology, SARS-CoV-2 endonuclease studies, and advanced microscopy instrumentation.

Teaching: Courses include Biophysical Chemistry (BCH 463), Intro to Research Techniques (BCH/CHM 392), and Honors Thesis supervision (BCH/CHM 493/492).

Labs/Teams: Chiu Laboratory at ASU, part of the Structural Biophysics group, focuses on electron imaging techniques and structural biology applications.
