Piret Viires is a Professor of Estonian Literature and Literary Theory at Tallinn University. She holds a doctorate in Estonian Literature from Tartu University (2006) and has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Helsinki, Eötvös Loránd University, and Ohio State University. As vice-chairperson of the Estonian Writers' Union, she bridges academic and creative literary spheres.
Her research focuses on contemporary Estonian literature, postmodernism/post-postmodernism, literature-technology intersections, and digital literature. She leads Tallinn University’s participation in the PRG636 project analyzing Estonia’s cultural transition period (1986–1998), and curates the Estonian Studies and Literary Studies MA programs.
Her recent work explores digital cultural transformations, queer literature in post-Soviet contexts, and Baltic cultural dynamics. Notable publications include Postmodernism in Estonian Literary Culture (2012) and studies on digital literature’s ephemeral nature. She actively contributes to scholarly editing and conference organization.
