About
Professor Pippa Chapman holds a Chair in Biogeochemistry at the University of Leeds' School of Geography and serves as Head of the Graduate School in Environment. She specializes in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem dynamics, with a focus on carbon and nutrient cycling in peatlands, agricultural soils, and water systems. Her work addresses climate change impacts, land management practices, and policy-relevant environmental sustainability.
Educational Background:
- PhD in Hydrochemistry, Imperial College, University of London
- BSc in Geochemistry, University of Reading
Research Interests:
Her expertise spans nutrient transfer between ecosystems, peatland restoration, and catchment management. Key areas include:
- DOC dynamics in surface waters and their environmental drivers
- Greenhouse gas fluxes from peatlands
- Soil resilience to climate extremes through agroecological practices
- Policy integration of land-use and soil functions
Current Projects:
- iCASP: Yorkshire Integrated Catchment Solutions
- LOCKED UP: Soil organic carbon stabilization mechanisms
- SoilBioHedge: Hedgerow biodiversity for soil restoration
Awards and Affiliations:
- NERC Fellowship (James Hutton Institute)
- Member of British Society of Soil Science and British Hydrological Society
Advising and Teaching:
Supervises PhD students in environmental sciences and teaches at both undergraduate (BSc Physical Geography) and postgraduate levels (MSc River Basin Dynamics). Current advisees include Murat Okumah, Tim Howson, Isobel Lloyd, Josiah Judson, Harrie Mort, and Denise Hick.
Research Groups:
- River Basin Processes and Management
- water@leeds
