About
Associate Professor Pinhas Grossman is a faculty member in the School of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he joined in 2013 after holding temporary positions at Vanderbilt University in the USA, Cardiff University in the UK, and IMPA in Brazil.
Professor Grossman earned his PhD in Mathematics from UC Berkeley (2006) and his BA from Yeshiva University (2000).
His primary research focuses on subfactors, positioned at the intersection of operator algebras, quantum topology, and representation theory. His work makes significant contributions to fusion categories, particularly the Asaeda-Haagerup fusion categories, graded extensions of generalized Haagerup categories, and the Brauer-Picard group of fusion categories. His research demonstrates deep connections between algebraic structures and quantum physics.
Analysis of Professor Grossman's publication record reveals a consistent trajectory from foundational work on intermediate subfactors to more recent investigations of graded extensions and quantum subgroups of fusion categories. His research shows strong collaborative patterns, frequently working with leading mathematicians including Masaki Izumi, Noah Snyder, Scott Morrison, and Vaughan Jones.
His research has been supported by notable grants:
- ARC Discovery Grant 2014-2016: 'Symmetries of Subfactors' (held jointly with Scott Morrison and Vaughan Jones)
- National Science Foundation Grant 2008-2011: 'Subfactors and Planar Algebras'
At UNSW, Professor Grossman serves as the Honours coordinator for Pure Mathematics (since 2017) and previously organized the School's Pure Mathematics Seminar (2013-2016). He has taught courses including Calculus, Algebra, Vector Calculus, Higher Analysis, and Banach and Operator Algebras.
