Phillip Lindley

Phillip Lindley is the Excellence 100 Professor of Art History at Loughborough University’s School of Design and Creative Arts. His academic career spans roles including Head of Department at Leicester University and fellowships at Downing College (Cambridge), St Catharine’s College (Cambridge), and Wolfson College (Cambridge). He is Curator of the Frangenberg Collection of conceptual art at Wolfson College.

His research expertise bridges medieval to contemporary art, specializing in historic sculpture, medieval/early modern architecture, and conceptual art. Notable achievements include winning the Reginald Taylor Prize (1987) and a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship. He has held visiting roles at Yale University and St Catharine’s College.

Recent professional activities include curating the Suzhou Lake Jinji Biennale’s exhibition featuring global artworks, including pieces by Amikam Toren. His academic background includes a PhD from Cambridge on 14th-century architecture, supervised by Jean Michel Massing, whom he honored through a co-edited Festschrift (2016).

Awards include the FSA (Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries) and sustained recognition for scholarly contributions. His work intersects academic research, curation, and pedagogy across diverse art historical domains.
