About
Philippe Muchez is a Professor heading the Ore Geology and Geofluids Research Group in the Division of Geology at KU Leuven. His research focuses on fluid migration in sedimentary basins and ore-forming processes, with field studies across Europe, the Central African Copperbelt (Zambia, DRC), and Nb-Ta-Sn-W-Au deposits in Central Africa.
His work spans ore geology, geofluid dynamics, and mineral deposit formation, emphasizing diagenetic to tectonic controls on mineralization. Recent investigations explore geometallurgy, fluid inclusion geochemistry, and disequilibrium crystallization in pegmatites.
Research trends from his publications (2022–2025) reveal a focus on: 1) Fluid evolution in sediment-hosted Cu-Co systems, 2) Orogenic gold in the Karagwe-Ankole Belt, and 3) Geometallurgical approaches to critical metal recovery.
Awards:
- Laureate of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium
- Member of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences
He leads the Ore Geology and Geofluids Research Group, coordinating international projects on African metallogeny and sustainable resource extraction.
