Philippa Walton

Dr Philippa Walton is a Lecturer in Roman Archaeology at the University of Leicester, part of the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. Her research focuses on Roman Britain's material culture, particularly through analysis of the Portable Antiquities Scheme data. She led a Leverhulme Trust-funded project investigating riverine object deposition across the Roman Empire, exploring depositor identities. Her work also examines coin use in 3rd-4th century AD Roman Britain, contributing to numismatic studies. In 2014, she became the first woman awarded the Blunt Prize for Numismatics by the British Numismatic Society.

Research Interests: Her work integrates coinage analysis, riverine deposition practices, and socio-economic patterns. She studies how material culture reflects cultural and political shifts, using both archaeological and metal-detecting data.
