Philip Withers

Philip Withers is the Regius Professor of Materials and Professor of Materials Science at the University of Manchester's School of Materials. He holds a PhD in Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on advanced materials characterization, including nanotomography, residual stress analysis, and fracture mechanics. He pioneered techniques in X-ray and neutron-based imaging, leading to breakthroughs in understanding material behavior under extreme conditions.

Withers has held key roles such as Founding Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials and established the Henry Moseley Multi-scale X-ray Imaging Facility. He has secured over £23 million in research funding, including leadership in EPSRC grants. His contributions include developing correlative tomography and advancing friction stir welding technologies for aerospace applications.

Notable achievements include the 2016 Royal Society Fellowship, the 2010 Royal Society’s Armourers & Brasier’s Medal, and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize (2014). He has authored over 900 publications and supervised 62 doctoral students. His work impacts sustainable energy, advanced manufacturing, and structural integrity of critical infrastructure.
