About
Professor Philip Murphy is a Professor of British and Commonwealth History at the University of London, based at the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) within the School of Advanced Study. He currently serves as Director of History & Policy at the IHR, having previously directed the Institute of Commonwealth Studies from 2009.
His research expertise spans:
- Twentieth-century British and Commonwealth historical dynamics
- Post-war decolonization processes in Africa and resulting political developments
- British Monarchy's evolving role in the Commonwealth
- Conservative party and right-wing political movements in Britain
- European colonial empires from the nineteenth century onward
- Intelligence history including MI5 operations and transnational intelligence networks
He is currently authoring a biography of journalist Andrew Roth and leads the Windrush Scandal research project. Professor Murphy also serves as joint editor of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History and teaches the Place & Policy module for the MA in History, Place & Community program.
