Philip Gardiner

Dr. Philip Gardiner is a Senior Lecturer in Analytical Science at Sheffield Hallam University, with a career spanning over 25 years in academia and research. He holds a PhD and is a Chartered Chemist (CChem) and Fellow (FRSC) of the Royal Society of Chemistry. His academic roles include teaching and leading MSc programs in Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis, both accredited by the RSC.

Research Interests: Dr. Gardiner’s work focuses on trace element speciation, bioremediation, and gold nanoparticle-based biosensors. Key areas include microbial transformation of pollutants, development of point-of-care biosensors for diabetes management, and environmental pollution remediation. Collaborations include projects with Prof. Tom Smith (chromium detoxification) and Prof. AA Kamnev (bacterial selenium transformations).

Publications: His 15 most recent articles (2023–2012) highlight advancements in microbial selenium reduction, gold nanoparticle functionalization for biosensing, and environmental risk assessments in Lake Maracaibo. Notable contributions include studies on chromium bioremediation and analytical methods for toxic element detection in environmental and biomedical samples.

Scientific Contributions: He has supervised 16 PhD and 3 MPhil students, with notable advisees including A.S. Eswayah (bioremediation of selenium) and H. Aldewachi (gold nanoparticle biosensors).
