Philip Buckland is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Archaeology at Umeå University's Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He serves as Vice Dean for Research and Postgraduate Education and previously directed The National Infrastructure for Archaeological Science (ArchLab) and Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD). His work focuses on interdisciplinary research infrastructure, particularly in environmental archaeology, climate change, and human activity impacts on biodiversity.
His research integrates fossil insect analysis (palaeoentomology) for reconstructing past environments and modern conservation policy, alongside FAIR data principles for open access. He co-developed the BugsCEP database and leads projects like Old Wood in a New Light (dendrochronology) and HerCul (climate adaptation of cultural heritage).
