Dr. Philip Bes is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) since December 2021. His career includes postdoctoral work with the Sagalassos Project and independent research (2010–2021) across Greece, Turkey, and Israel. He holds a PhD from the University of Leuven (Belgium) under the ICRATES Project, preceded by studies in Classical Archaeology at Leiden University (Netherlands).
Research interests focus on Roman Eastern Mediterranean archaeology, particularly pottery analysis (Hellenistic to Late Roman periods), ceramic production techniques, and regional connectivity patterns. Key projects include the Limyra pottery studies (since 2013) examining urban development and distribution networks in Hellenistic and Roman contexts.
He has participated in excavations at sites such as Aigeira Kleidi/Samikon, Ephesos, Sagalassos, and Caesarea Maritima. Current affiliations include the ÖAW’s Team for Ceramic Studies and collaborations with international archaeological projects.
