Dr Phil Mayne is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Politics at the University of York, joining in February 2024. Previously, he taught at the University of Sheffield and the University of Hull. His research focuses on strategic ethics, particularly the intersection between adherence to the just war tradition and success in counterinsurgency. He challenges established Western counterinsurgency doctrines and explores ethical framing in conflicts and European security collaborations.

His work includes analyzing classical counterinsurgency campaigns through case studies and examining British defense policy during Brexit. He is currently under contract with Routledge to publish a monograph titled Strategic Ethics and Counterinsurgency: Ethics or Efficacy? Future research will address geopolitical narratives in conflict and European integration dynamics.
Teaching interests span international relations theory, security studies, defense policy, and counterterrorism.
Collaborations include work with the University of Sheffield on European security frameworks.
