About
Dr. Phil Massey is an Astronomer at Lowell Observatory, specializing in the evolution of massive stars in Local Group galaxies. He joined Lowell in 2000 after serving at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). Massey earned his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences (Molecular Biology) from Brussels Free University (2013).
His research uses optical photometry and spectroscopy to study how environmental factors like metallicity affect stellar evolution. He mentors undergraduate researchers through the REU program and conducts observations at facilities including Las Campanas Observatory.
Massey has authored over 300 publications and maintains active outreach through public lectures and educational videos on stellar phenomena. He contributes to astronomical instrumentation development, including work on Lowell's Large Monolithic Imager.
