Petri Ala-Laurila serves as Professor in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Program at the University of Helsinki and as Supervisor in the Doctoral Programme Brain & Mind. He also holds an Assistant Professor position at Aalto University since March 2014. His research focuses on the neural mechanisms of vision, particularly how retinal circuits process visual information under varying light conditions.
Ala-Laurila's research interests center on visual perception and neural processing in the retina. His work examines how the retina operates with remarkable fidelity across vastly different lighting conditions, with special focus on signal processing mechanisms at synaptic and cellular levels when only a handful of light quanta underlie detection. His research combines biosciences and natural sciences to understand the fundamental principles of vision.
His recent publication record shows a consistent output with 38 publications spanning from 2002 to 2025. The research trends indicate a strong focus on retinal circuitry, visual adaptation mechanisms, and the neural basis of light detection. His work frequently appears in high-impact journals including Nature Communications, PNAS, and Current Biology, demonstrating significant contributions to understanding visual processing at both cellular and behavioral levels.
