About
Peter Wipf is a distinguished academic holding multiple roles at the University of Pittsburgh and Duke University. He is currently a Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry (since 2004), Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the School of Pharmacy (since 2001), and Adjunct Professor at Duke University's Department of Chemistry (since 2002). His research focuses on total synthesis of natural products, organometallic methodology, and medicinal chemistry, with significant contributions to mitochondrial antioxidant therapies and drug discovery.
His career includes roles as Assistant Professor (1990–1995), Associate Professor (1995–1997), and Professor (1997–2004) at the University of Pittsburgh. He directs the Centers for Combinatorial Chemistry and Chemical Methodologies & Library Development. Wipf has received numerous awards, including the Ernest Guenther Award (2009), Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award (2008), and AAAS Fellowship (2002).
His research spans synthetic organic chemistry, development of novel drug candidates, and mitochondrial dysfunction mechanisms. Notable work includes the JP4-039 antioxidant and PTP4A3 phosphatase inhibitors. He serves on editorial boards for *Organic Syntheses* and *Organic Reactions*, and as Series Editor for *The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds*.
Recent studies highlight mitochondrial-targeted therapies for cardiac injury, radiation-induced damage, and neurodegenerative diseases. His lab explores ferroptosis modulation, small molecule Hsp70 agonists, and synthetic methods for complex molecules like clavine alkaloids.
Awards and grants reflect his leadership in chemical synthesis and drug development, with a focus on translational research bridging chemistry and medicine.
