Dr. Peter Whitewood is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of the History, American Studies, and War Studies programmes at York St John University’s School of Humanities. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2013). His research focuses on Soviet political and international history, particularly the Stalin era, including the Soviet-Polish War’s legacy and the Red Army’s role in Stalin’s purges. He teaches modules on Soviet communism, Soviet history special subjects, and historiography.
His current research explores Soviet alignment with international humanitarian law post-1917, emphasizing the Soviet Red Cross’s operational history. He supervises postgraduate students in Soviet political history, Stalinism, and modern European international history. Whitewood is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and serves as a BASEES member. His work bridges academic teaching, research supervision, and contributions to historical discourse on authoritarian regimes.
