Dr. Peter Thompson is the Sydney L. Mayer Associate Professor of American History at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the Atlantic World during the Age of Revolutions, with expertise in Colonial North America, the British Caribbean, and early American history. He is completing a biography on Thomas Jefferson and William Short for Oxford University Press. His work spans seventeenth to nineteenth-century topics, integrating political, cultural, and intellectual history.
Research interests include the social and cultural history of Britain's colonies in North America (1607–c.1800), the anglophone Caribbean, and race history. He has published widely in journals like the William and Mary Quarterly and Journal of the Early Republic, and authored Rum Punch and Revolution, a cultural history of taverngoing in Philadelphia.
Dr. Thompson supervises DPhil and Masters students in political, cultural, and intellectual history. His current projects explore seventeenth-century America and the Caribbean, emphasizing transnational connections and marginalized voices. He is also actively involved in peer review for journals such as Modern Philology.
