About
Peter R. Leavitt is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change and Society at the University of Regina, where he co-directs the Institute of Environmental Change and Society. His research integrates limnology, paleoecology, and ecosystem modeling to understand factors regulating lake structure and function. Dr. Leavitt's work quantifies human impacts on aquatic systems through four themes: paleoecology calibration methods; nitrogen pollution effects; climate-lake interactions; and sustainability management frameworks applied globally.
Key Research Contributions:
- Pioneered pigment-based paleolimnological methods for reconstructing environmental change
- Established nitrogen pollution as key driver of cyanobacterial toxicity increases
- Documented climate warming effects on carbon sequestration in prairie lakes
- Developed Energy-mass (Em) flux framework unifying limnology and paleoecology
Honors:
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
- Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change and Society
