About
Peter Philip Edwards is a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, with a career spanning over four decades. He has held leadership roles including Head of Inorganic Chemistry at Oxford (2003–2013), Chair of Chemistry and Materials at the University of Birmingham (1999–2003), and Head of the School of Chemistry at Birmingham (1996–1999). His academic journey began at Salford University with a B.Sc. (1970) and Ph.D. (1974), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Cornell University and the University of Oxford.
- B.Sc., Salford University (1970)
- Ph.D., Salford University (1974)
Edwards' research focuses on the structural and electronic properties of materials, particularly transitions between metallic, non-metallic, and superconducting states. His work encompasses alkali metals in non-aqueous solvents, colloidal metal particles, zeolite hosts, high-temperature superconductivity, hydrogen storage materials, and carbon-neutral liquid fuels. His interdisciplinary approach has led to collaborations across institutions, including the establishment of the King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology-Oxford Centre for Petrochemical Research in 2010.
His accolades include the Hughes Medal (2003), Tilden Medal (1992), and Corday-Morgan Medal (1987) from the Royal Society of Chemistry, as well as election to prestigious bodies like the Royal Society of London (1996) and the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina, 2009). He co-founded the UK Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Consortium in 2002 and served as the UK Representative of the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (2008).
