Dr Peter Maxwell-Stuart serves as Senior Tutor and Researcher at the School of History, University of St Andrews. He specializes in medieval and early modern history, particularly focusing on alchemy, occult practices, and religious scholarship. His research engages with historical texts, translation studies, and intellectual history.
Key research interests include the history of science in the medieval period, the socio-religious context of witchcraft accusations, and the interpretation of classical and early modern texts. His work frequently bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches.
Notable publications include editions and translations of significant historical works such as Martín Del Río’s Disquisitionum magicarum and Unimpeded Sailing. His 2014 book The British Witch examines the cultural and legal dimensions of witchcraft accusations in early modern Britain.
