Dr. Peter Matanle is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies. He holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (BA & MA), the University of Essex (MA), and a PhD from the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on East Asian development, particularly Japan's social and cultural geography, demographic change, and environmental policy. He has authored/co-authored books on Japan's shrinking regions and lifetime employment systems, and contributes to interdisciplinary studies on depopulation and sustainability.
Teaching activities include modules on Japanese environmental development and media studies. Currently supervising six PhD candidates, his research explores depopulation dividends, climate change adaptation, and regional revitalization.
