Peter Lythe is a Researcher at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL), where he is part of the Bentham Project. He currently serves as a Transcription Assistant, focusing on preparing Jeremy Bentham’s writings for publication and managing the award-winning Transcribe Bentham initiative. He holds a Ph.D. from UCL (2017–2022), supervised by Professors Philip Schofield and Prince Saprai, exploring the intersection of Bentham’s religious views and utilitarian philosophy.
Education includes a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from UCL (2014–2016), a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Master of Science in Geographical Information Systems (M.Sc.) from the University of Leeds (2001–2008).
His research interests span the history of ideas, philosophy of religion, legal theory, and the intellectual legacy of Jeremy Bentham. He has contributed to academic publications and teaches on the 'Jeremy Bentham and the Utilitarian Tradition' master’s module. Peter is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and served as Co-Chair of the 17th International Society for Utilitarian Studies Conference (2024).
He actively participates in academic initiatives, including editorial work for The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham and outreach through Transcribe Bentham, fostering public engagement with historical texts.
