About
Peter Lindholm is an Associate Professor (Docent) and Lecturer in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet. He leads the Hyperbaric Medicine research group, focusing on oxygen therapy and extreme environments. He holds a Medical Degree (2002) and a PhD (2002) from Karolinska Institutet, with expertise in physiology, radiology, and diving medicine.
His research spans hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for conditions like long-COVID, pulmonary embolism, and radiation cystitis. He also studies diving physiology, including breath-hold diving risks and pulmonary edema mechanisms. Lindholm collaborates internationally on clinical trials, such as the HOT-LoCO trial for long-COVID and the RICH-ART trial for radiation-induced cystitis.
He has secured grants from the Swedish Research Council, Heart-Lung Foundation, and others. His work integrates hyperbaric medicine with radiology, exploring CT and MRI innovations for pulmonary conditions. Lindholm’s team investigates biomarkers, imaging techniques, and oxygen’s anti-inflammatory effects. He also engages in public outreach and medical education.
Key achievements include pioneering HBOT trials for ARDS in COVID-19 patients and developing non-invasive diagnostic methods for pulmonary embolism. His lab supports over 10 researchers, with projects on nitric oxide dynamics and hyperbaric safety protocols.
