About
Prof. Dr. Peter Langer is a Chair of Preparative Organic Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry, University of Rostock since 2004 and Head of Department at the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) since 2005. He became Managing Director of the Institute of Chemistry in 2016.
- Studied Chemistry at University of Hannover (1989-1994), completed diploma at MIT (1993/94).
- Doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) at Hannover (1997, summa cum laude), Postdoc at Cambridge (1997-1998), Habilitation at Göttingen (2001).
Research Interests: Focuses on catalytic coupling and cyclization reactions for medicinal compounds, heterocycles, carbohydrates, and new organic materials. His work emphasizes transition metal catalysis (e.g., Pd-catalyzed domino/tandem reactions) and pharmacologically relevant heterocycle-carbohydrate hybrids.
Key Publications (2014-2016) highlight innovations in palladium-catalyzed C-N coupling/C-H activation for biscarbazoles, indolophenanthridines, and naphtho-fused heterocycles, with applications in pharmaceuticals and materials science.
- Scientific Awards: 2015 'Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam' (Pakistan), 2014 Gold Medal from Yerevan State University, 2013 Life Member of Academy of Sciences (Pakistan), 2011-2022 Honorary Doctorates from Armenia, Vietnam, Syria, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Ukraine, and India.
- Grants: German Academic Scholarship Foundation, Chemical Industry Fund, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Feodor Lynen), DFG Heisenberg Fellowship.
Labs & Collaborations: Research group spans University of Rostock and Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT). Supervised over 100 PhDs and 80 diploma/master's theses, with a global reputation in synthetic organic chemistry.
