Professor Peter Kelly is a leading academic in Surface Engineering and Materials Science at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). He serves as Head of the Surface Engineering Group and Research Lead for the Department of Engineering. Previously, he was Director of the Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering Research Centre. He joined MMU in 2005 from the University of Salford, where he earned his PhD in Surface Engineering (1997).
His research focuses on advanced materials and surface engineering, particularly in pulsed magnetron sputtering (including HIPIMS), photocatalytic coatings, antimicrobial surfaces, and food packaging barrier films. Notable achievements include pioneering work on TiO₂ coatings for water treatment, alumina-coated polymer packaging, and functional coatings for industrial applications. His group's work has been recognized through outstanding ratings in Innovate UK KTP projects and contributions to REF2021 impact case studies.
Professor Kelly holds significant roles in academic governance, including membership in the EPSRC College and the British Standards Committee for Advanced Technical Ceramics. He has supervised over 30 PhD students and regularly serves as an external examiner globally. His research collaborations span universities worldwide, including partnerships in Brazil, China, and Europe, fostering innovation in sustainable materials and environmental technologies.
