Peter Kanowski

Peter Kanowski is Professor of Forestry at the Australian National University's Fenner School of Environment and Society, where he also serves as Master of University House and Director of HDR Supervision. A Rhodes Scholar with a doctorate in forest genetics from Oxford University, his career spans academic leadership, research, teaching, and policy development in forest and environmental sustainability.

Research focuses on:

• Forest governance and certification systems
• Planted forest policy and smallholder forestry
• Indigenous land management practices
• Environmental sustainability education
• Urban forestry stewardship

Current ACIAR-supported projects examine policy impacts in Lao PDR and community fire management in Indonesia. His scholarship integrates ecological and social dimensions of forest management through field-based research across Australia, Asia-Pacific, and global contexts.

Professor Kanowski has contributed to national inquiries including Australia's State of Environment 2011 Committee and COAG's National Bushfire Inquiry, and maintains active engagement with The Forests Dialogue initiatives. Recognition includes honorary doctorate from University of Freiburg (2019) and ANU Chancellor's Award for Service to the University (2022).
