About
Peter Jakobsen is an Affiliate Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where he is affiliated with The Cosmic Dawn Center. His research focuses on early universe studies, galaxy formation and evolution, and cosmology, with particular emphasis on observations using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec).
His research interests span several key areas in modern astrophysics:
- Observational cosmology and the early universe
- Galaxy formation and evolution at high redshifts (z > 6)
- Reionization epoch studies
- Spectroscopic analysis of distant galaxies
- Instrumentation development for space telescopes, particularly JWST/NIRSpec
Professor Jakobsen's recent work has been centered on analyzing data from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), with numerous publications on galaxy populations at redshifts z=10-14, representing some of the earliest galaxies ever observed. His research has contributed significantly to our understanding of cosmic dawn and the formation of the first galaxies. He has been particularly involved in studies of Lyman-α emission at extreme redshifts, galaxy metallicity evolution, and the development of spectroscopic techniques for studying the early universe.
His scientific contributions have gained substantial attention, with several of his papers being picked up by numerous news outlets (up to 104 outlets for some publications), blogged about, and referenced in Wikipedia pages, indicating the impact of his work in the field.
Professor Jakobsen maintains active collaborations with researchers worldwide, as evidenced by his extensive co-authorship network across multiple high-impact publications. His work often involves large international teams working on JWST data analysis and interpretation.
