Peter J. Varman is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Rice University, where he has been on faculty since 1983. He holds a B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur (1978), an M.S. from the University of Texas at Austin (1980), and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same university (1983). His research focuses on computer architecture, storage systems, memory architectures, virtualization, resource allocation, parallel computing, and cloud computing.
Dr. Varman served as Program Director at the National Science Foundation (2002–2005) and held industry roles including Scholar-In-Residence at VMware Inc. (2011–2012, 2013 summer) and Visiting Faculty at Intel Corporation (2012 summer). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and active in professional organizations such as the Association for Computing Machinery and the IEEE Computer Society.
He has received the 1996 Schlumberger Foundation Award and the 1984 IBM Faculty Development Award. Dr. Varman has editorial roles in the Journal of Combinatorial Optimization (since 2006) and IEEE Transactions on Computers (associate editor, 2000–2006).
