Professor Peter H Wilson is the Chichele Professor of the History of War at the University of Oxford, based at All Souls College. His research focuses on the impact of war on European and global development, alongside the history of the Holy Roman Empire. He has won the 2023 Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History for his book Iron and Blood. Wilson currently supervises DPhil students in areas including European military history (1500–1900) and German-speaking Europe's socio-political dynamics.
Teaching responsibilities include Prelims courses on military history and the Thirty Years War, as well as graduate seminars on War in the Modern World. He contributes to research initiatives like the European Fiscal-Military System (1530–1870) project. Media engagements include podcast discussions on German military history and BBC analyses of the Thirty Years War.
Current doctoral advisees include John Allin, Alan Hawley, Bethany McNamara-Dale (part-time), Jay Mens, and Christian Stecher. Wilson's work bridges military strategy, political structures, and cultural identity, with a particular emphasis on Central Europe's historical role in shaping modern conflicts.
