About
Peter Graham Mortyn is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), affiliated with the Marine and Environmental Biogeosciences Research Group (MERS) at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB). He holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2000) and has held academic positions at institutions including California State University, Fresno, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on marine biogeosciences, particularly planktonic foraminifera and their role in understanding climate change, ocean acidification, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
Research Interests
Mortyn’s work integrates biomineralization processes, water column dynamics, and climate modeling to study past and present oceanic systems. Key areas include:
- Foraminifera ecology and biodiversity
- Climate proxies using calcareous microfossils
- Agulhas Current variability and South Atlantic hydrography
- Impacts of anthropogenic forcing on marine calcifiers
Recent Projects
He leads/co-leads initiatives such as BIODIVERSIDAD GLOBAL DE CALCIFICADORES PLANCTÓNICOS MARINOS (2021–2025) and BONITOS: AEI-DFG Pelagic Calcification (2025–2028), addressing global calcifier biodiversity and pelagic biomineralization. Collaborations span institutions in Europe, Africa, and North America.
Awards & Recognition
While no specific awards are listed, his h-index of 28 and 2,760 citations reflect significant scholarly impact.
Labs & Teams
Affiliated with MERS Group, contributing to datasets like Derived Particulate Inorganic Carbon (PIC) ratios and Emiliania huxleyi morphological analysis at PANGAEA repositories.
