Peter F. Martelli, PhD, MSPH is an Associate Professor of Healthcare Administration at the Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University, with a courtesy appointment as Associate Professor of Strategy and International Business. He also serves as Associate Faculty at the Strategy Group, Magellan Research Center, iaeLyon School of Management, and as Visiting Professor at the School of Medicine, Georgian American University in Tbilisi, Georgia, and at iaeLyon School of Management in Lyon, France.
Dr. Martelli's educational background includes:
- PhD in Health Services and Policy Analysis from the University of California-Berkeley
- MSPH from Thomas Jefferson University
- BA with Distinction in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania with minors in Biology and the History & Sociology of Science
His research focuses on organizational errors and the interdisciplinary application of High Reliability Organizing (HRO) models to promote system safety and reliability across various sectors including healthcare, wildland fire and emergency response, oil exploration, and civil and industrial infrastructure. He has conducted international projects in Georgia Republic, Ethiopia, Guinea-Conakry, Honduras, and other countries, examining patient safety, performance improvement, and disease management. As a Fulbright U.S. Scholar to Georgia Republic (2021-2023), he worked extensively on healthcare improvement initiatives.
Dr. Martelli serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management at UC-Berkeley (previously as Co-Director), the Cardiovascular Health Initiative, and the Cambridge Roundtable on Science and Religion. He is also Chair Elect of the Global Health Management Forum at the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
His teaching accomplishments include:
- Academy of Management Healthcare Management Division's Excellence in Teaching Award (2024)
- Suffolk University's Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019)
- Graduate Student Association's Dean John Brennan Award for Outstanding Instruction to Graduate Students (2016)
Among his professional service activities, Dr. Martelli serves as Associate Editor for Quality Management in Health Care and was Guest Editor for a Special Issue on High Reliability Organizations in Safety Science. He has organized multiple conferences including the HRO 40th Anniversary Conference and the 23rd Organization Theory in Health Care Conference.
