About
Peter Dunfield is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. His research program investigates uncultured microbial diversity, methanotrophic bacteria, and extremophiles in geothermal environments.
Research combines cultivation techniques with DNA-based methods to explore metabolic potential of uncultured bacteria, particularly in geothermal systems. Additional work focuses on methanotrophic applications for biofiltration of industrial methane emissions, bioremediation of oilsands waste, and biotechnological conversion of natural gas.
Recent publications demonstrate expertise in hydrocarbon degradation microbiology, protist ecology in industrial environments, and metabolic pathways in methanotrophic bacteria. The research advances environmental biotechnology and fundamental understanding of microbial communities in extreme habitats.
