Professor Peter C. Gerhardstein is a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Binghamton University. His research focuses on visual perception, memory development, and the impact of digital media on cognitive processes. He holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota and a BA from Carleton College.
His work investigates perceptual development in infants and children, including contour integration, orientation sensitivity, and transfer of skills from digital media to real-world interactions. Recent studies explore how prolonged exposure to digital content alters visual perception and compares structural differences between digital and real-world images.
Teaching interests include developmental psychology, perceptual development, and statistics. He currently leads the Infant and Child Studies Project and is accepting graduate students for Fall 2024.
