Peter Andrew White

Professor Peter Andrew White is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), serving as a Professor in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) since 2013. He is also an Honorary Consultant Virologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital. His research focuses on molecular virology, viral discovery, and antiviral development, with key projects on norovirus epidemiology, adenovirus molecular studies, viral evolution, and paleovirology. He holds a B.Sc. from King’s College London and a PhD from University College London.

• Professional Experience: Royal Society Postdoctoral Fellow (1996–1997), Hepatitis Group Leader at Prince of Wales Hospital (1998–2002), Senior Lecturer (2003–2007), and current roles include teaching MICR3061 (Viruses and Disease) and coordinating postgraduate research.

Research interests include viral transmission, outbreak analysis, and drug discovery. His lab has discovered over 100 novel viruses and contributed to antiviral therapies targeting SARS-CoV-2 and other RNA viruses. Awards include the Titan of Teaching Award (2015) and Fellowship in the Australian Society of Microbiology (2011).

• Grants/Advising: Secured substantial peer-reviewed and industry funding, supervising numerous PhD and Honours students. Leads a research group with projects on viral discovery, antiviral development, and bioinformatics.

He actively participates in professional organizations such as the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology and the Australasian Virology Society.
