About
Per Gustafsson is a Professor of Epidemiology specializing in Social Epidemiology and Register-Based Research at Umeå Universitet's Department of Epidemiology and Global Health. He serves as Deputy Head of Department and chairs the Master Programs in Public Health (PRPH) at the Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on equity in health and care systems, particularly intersectional inequities, neighborhood effects, and life course epidemiology. He also investigates mental health disparities and the embodiment of discrimination among marginalized groups like the Sámi in Sweden.
His teaching emphasizes advanced epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health theory at both graduate and doctoral levels. Current research projects include studies on oral care equity, precision public health for obesity, and causal inference methodologies for health inequities. He leads the Norrland Observatory for Equity in Health and Health Care and participates in U-CHEC (Umeå Center for Global Health Research).
Key projects include analyzing the impact of Swedish health reforms (e.g., free patient choice policies) on healthcare access and equity, as well as global studies in The Gambia on vaccination inequities. His work bridges methodological innovation (e.g., decision trees, interrupted time series) with policy relevance, aiming to reduce systemic health disparities.
