Dr Penelope Johnson is an Associate Professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University. She holds a PhD in Translation from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Her research focuses on translation theory, postcolonial studies, and translation pedagogy, with specific interests in minority languages and self-translation. She teaches Spanish-English translation modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and coordinates the MA in Translation Studies program.

Research Interests: Dr Johnson employs Bourdieusian concepts of field and capital to analyze translation’s role in shaping cultural representations. Her current projects include translation of border writing, self-translation practices, and the application of corpus linguistics in translation education. She leads the MLAC Translation and Linguistics Research Group and collaborates with the Instituto Cervantes on foreign language teaching initiatives.
Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD candidates in translation studies and coordinates MA translation projects. Engaged in pedagogical research on threshold concepts in translation education and assessment frameworks for the year abroad program.
Labs/Teams: Convenor of the MLAC Translation and Linguistics Research Group; collaborates with ELE-UK and the Instituto Cervantes on language education.
