About
Dr. Peipei Ping is a distinguished Professor of Physiology and Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine. With a career spanning over three decades, she has established herself as a leading expert at the intersection of cardiovascular biology, proteomics, and data science. Her work bridges traditional biomedical research with cutting-edge computational approaches, creating innovative methodologies for understanding complex biological systems.
Dr. Ping received her PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University of Arizona in 1990 and completed her undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering & Mathematics at Zhejiang University in China in 1980. This unique combination of engineering, mathematical, and physiological training has positioned her to pioneer computational approaches in cardiovascular research.
Dr. Ping's research program focuses on applying advanced data science techniques to unravel the complexities of cardiovascular biology and disease. Her laboratory has been at the forefront of developing AI-driven approaches for analyzing proteomic and multi-omics data, with particular emphasis on protein dynamics, post-translational modifications, and mitochondrial function in heart disease. She has pioneered the integration of knowledge graphs, deep learning, and multi-modal data analysis to create comprehensive models of cardiovascular pathophysiology.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated AI and machine learning applications in biomedicine, with a focus on explainable AI, large language models, and ethical frameworks for clinical implementation. This evolution reflects her commitment to translating computational discoveries into clinically actionable insights while addressing the ethical considerations of AI in healthcare.
Dr. Ping's exceptional contributions to science have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the UC Distinguished Professor title (2021), the Donald F. Hunt Distinguished Contribution in Proteomics Award (2021), and the Outstanding Investigator Award from NIH/NHLBI (2018-2025). She has also received the Dennis B. McNamara Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Science (2022) and the Robert M. Berne Distinguished Lectureship from the American Physiological Society (2015).
As a dedicated mentor and research leader, Dr. Ping has secured continuous NIH funding for over two decades, currently serving as Principal Investigator on multiple major grants including the "Omics Phenotyping for Identifying Molecular Signatures of the Healthy and Failing Heart" (NIH R35HL135772) and "iDISCOVER: Integrated Data Science Training in CardioVascular Medicine" (NIH T32HL139450). Her laboratory has trained numerous scientists who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.
Dr. Ping leads the Ping Lab at UCLA, which functions as an interdisciplinary hub bringing together computational biologists, cardiovascular physiologists, data scientists, and clinicians. The lab has developed several innovative platforms including knowledge graph approaches for biomedical data integration, deep learning models for protein modification prediction, and data harmonization frameworks for cardiovascular research.
