About
Peilin Zhou is Professor of Marine Engineering in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Engineering. He joined the university on 1 April 2001, where he established the marine engineering discipline and developed both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. He currently serves as the Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes, overseeing admissions and curriculum development.
His research focuses on marine propulsion systems, engine combustion and simulation, emissions control (NOx, SOx, CO2), alternative fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen, fuel cells, biodiesel applications, life cycle analysis of waterborne transport, and green shipyard technologies. His work contributes significantly to sustainable maritime transport and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean energy and responsible industry.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend toward sustainable marine energy, particularly in hydrogen and ammonia-based fuels, emissions reduction, life cycle assessment, and safety analysis. Research spans numerical simulation, environmental impact evaluation, and advanced control systems for marine applications, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to modern maritime challenges.
Scientific Awards:
- Denny Medal Recipient (2018)
- Fellow of IMarEST (2011)
- Fellow of RINA (2009)
Professor Zhou has led and contributed to multiple research grants, including EU Horizon Europe and Innovate UK projects such as FLEETfor55, AI-PASSPORT, and NH3CRAFT, where he serves as Principal or Co-investigator. These projects focus on energy efficiency, digital platforms for maritime safety, and sustainable fuel integration. He has supervised numerous research students and is actively involved in international collaboration, conference organization, and editorial roles.
He is a key member of several research teams and projects focused on sustainable maritime transport, including the FLEETfor55, AI-PASSPORT, and NH3CRAFT consortia.
