Key research interests include the interplay between disaster response, state-civil society relations, and radical political theory. He has authored books such as Disasters and Social Reproduction: Crisis Response between the State and Community (2021) and edited volumes like Unworking (2021). His work bridges cultural studies with Marxist critiques of capitalism and explores themes like mutual aid networks, unworking as a political paradigm, and the role of art in activism.
Recent publications analyze Airbnb's impact on urban politics (2024) and the cultural logic of low-growth capitalism (2020). His articles often critique neoliberalism’s effects on social reproduction and disaster management. Peer Illner’s interdisciplinary approach integrates political theory, sociology, and cultural analysis to address contemporary crises and movements.
