Pauliina Remes

Pauliina Remes is a Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Uppsala University, specializing in the history of ancient philosophy with a focus on Neoplatonism and Plato. She holds a PhD from King's College London (2001) and has served as a lecturer (2007) before her current professorship (2015). Her research explores Plotinus, ancient concepts of self, moral psychology, and metaphysics. She teaches courses on ancient philosophy, philosophy of mind, and the history of human being concepts in English, alongside Swedish-language courses on ancient and medieval philosophy.

Key research interests include Neoplatonic theories of reason, self-knowledge, and inwardness, alongside conversational norms in Plato. Recent projects address embodiment in Neoplatonism and Plato’s Timaeus. She organizes Uppsala’s history of philosophy research seminar and has held research leave at Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (2015).

Publications span edited volumes like Ancient Philosophy of the Self (2008) and The Routledge Handbook of Neoplatonism (2014). Her work appears in journals such as RHIZOMATA and Chôra, addressing topics like Plotinus’ epistemology and Olympiodorus’ ethics. She contributes to academic discourse through reviews in Mind and Classical Review.
