Paula Xavier

Paula Xavier is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu, where she has been teaching since the 2007/2008 academic year. She holds a PhD in Psychology (Forensic Psychology) from the University of Coimbra (2019), a Master's degree in Psychosocial Intervention with Children and Youth at Risk from the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (2011), and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Coimbra (2001). She is also a certified Specialist in Educational Psychology and a member of the Portuguese Order of Psychologists.

Her research focuses on psychology, educational psychology, forensic psychology, social education, special and inclusive education, and psychosocial intervention with children and youth at risk. She has particular expertise in gender equality, diversity and inclusion, family studies, and LGBTQ+ parenting. Her work often examines the Portuguese context, with studies on homoparentality, child protection systems, and inclusive education practices.

Xavier's publication record shows a strong focus on contemporary social issues, with recent work addressing mental health in higher education during the pandemic, child protection in school and community settings, and the evolution of inclusive education terminology in Portugal. Her research demonstrates consistent engagement with practical applications in educational and social intervention settings.

She coordinates the Diversity and Equality Center (NuDI) at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu and has supervised numerous master's theses in psychosocial intervention, special education, and social education. Her professional activities include extensive participation in conferences and events related to education, psychology, and social inclusion, both in Portugal and internationally.

Xavier leads research projects focused on gender dimensions in AI usage in higher education and participates in initiatives promoting inclusion and diversity at the institutional level. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in educational and social contexts, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations including children and youth at risk.
