About
Dr. Paul Trodden is a Senior Lecturer and Theme Lead for Control at the University of Sheffield's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering (2009) and an MEng in Engineering Science (2003) from the University of Oxford and Bristol, respectively. His research focuses on Model Predictive Control (MPC) for constrained systems, with applications spanning power networks and spacecraft dynamics.
Education
- MEng, Engineering Science, University of Oxford (2003)
- PhD, Aerospace Engineering, University of Bristol (2009)
Research Interests
Trodden develops novel MPC algorithms for distributed systems, emphasizing robustness in uncertain environments. His work includes invariant set theory for stability analysis, networked control over imperfect channels, and power system optimization for smart grids. Recent publications explore data-driven control, DC microgrids, and coalitional MPC for modular systems.
Scientific Awards
- Outstanding Reviewer, Automatica (2014/15, 2016/17)
- Outstanding Reviewer, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems (2016)
Professional Activities
Trodden serves as Associate Editor for the IET Smart Grid and is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society, IEEE Power & Energy Society, and IFAC Technical Committee 2.3 (Non-linear Control Systems). His teaching includes Advanced Control (ACS6116) and Feedback Systems Design (ACS342).
