About
Dr Paul Thompson is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Ulster University. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of vitamin D and retinoid pathways, particularly their roles in metabolic function, healthy aging, and diseases such as prostate cancer and melanoma. He is also involved in investigating SUMOylation's impact on vitamin D response during chronic disease and inflammation.
Education:
- PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical College of Ohio, 1993
- Postdoctoral research with Prof Mark Haussler, University of Arizona
- Worked at LION Bioscience AG (Heidelberg, Germany) from 2002-2003
Research interests include molecular nutrition, pharmacology of vitamin D signaling, nuclear receptor-mediated pathways, and the application of these pathways in understanding drug bioavailability and disease mechanisms. He also examines how SUMOylation modulates vitamin D responses in chronic disease and inflammatory conditions.
Advising & Grants:
- Funded by Prostate Cancer UK, Prostate Research Campaign UK, and the European Union CEC Framework 7
- Supervises PhD students in vitamin D/retinoid pathway research
- Serves as Postgraduate Tutor for the Biomedical Sciences Research Institute
Laboratory: His lab investigates vitamin D/retinoid biology, metabolic gene regulation, and SUMOylation's role in disease contexts.
