Prof. Dr. Paul Swoboda is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, where he leads the Machine Learning research group. Previously, he held a Junior Professorship in Computer Vision at the University of Mannheim’s School of Business Informatics and Mathematics. His research focuses on optimization algorithms for structured prediction problems and applications in computer vision tasks like tracking, segmentation, and correspondence. He earned his PhD from Heidelberg University under Prof. Christoph Schnörr and conducted postdoctoral research at IST Austria with Prof. Vladimir Kolmogorov.
Research interests span computer vision, machine learning, and convex/combinatorial optimization. He leads the DFG-funded project 'DiscreteOPt' and collaborates on process analytics initiatives. Awards include the Best Paper Award at ICPM and CAISE'23. His work bridges theoretical optimization frameworks with practical vision challenges.
Prof. Swoboda advises students on thesis topics in machine learning and computer vision, often involving industry collaboration. His academic trajectory includes leadership at the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics and active participation in interdisciplinary research groups.
